Ballast Water

Ballast water tanks on large cargo ships contain multiple life forms and microorganisms. Many of these do not survive the voyage. By contrast, the surviving organisms can present a problem for the native flora and fauna at destination ports. Solutions are needed – and some of these are provided by our filter meshes.

On every voyage, a certain percentage of these microorganisms will thrive in foreign ecosystems. This leads to the proliferation of invasive species which can present significant issues for biodiversity in the affected areas. In 2004, to minimise the negative effects of international shipping, the international shipping community adopted a ballast water agreement. This set out a number of parameters and threshholds.

Alongside physical and chemical measures, our stainless steel meshes are now being used in a classical mechanical filtration process. As large masses of water are under pressure, advanced levels of robustness and also high flow rates are important requirements for our filter elements. The highly corrosive application environment also demands exceptionally high grade materials.

Working with BOPP, you have a partner providing filter elements meeting all these requirements and also capaable of manufacturing filter elements to your individual specifications.

  • Guaranteed high flow rates
  • High alloy materials designed for use in highly corrosive environments reduce maintenance requirements
  • Robust meshes ensure long service life
