Lightning Strike Protection
The Earth is struck by lightning 10 to 30 million times every day. These lightning strikes can involve forces up to 100 million volts and currents up to 100,000 amperes within split seconds. Reliable protection is essential for vulnerable structures.
Aluminium meshes provide reliable protection from extensive damage due to lightning strikes. They are extremely versatile in use and their Faraday Cage properties provide best value protection against damage caused by lightning strikes. They are also extremely malleable, which means they can even be formed around curved shapes with no problems.
Lightning strike is a particular issue for the aviation industry. The emergence of the latest generation of aeroplanes, where the fuselage and wings consist primarily of composite materials rather than electrically conductive aluminium, means that the use of steel meshes to protect the carbon fibre shells of modern jets is no longer viable. It is the same for helicopter rotor blades, which are clad with alumiunim meshes.
We highly recommend our square weave meshes for this application, which we can supply either precision cut to size or in roll form.
- Versatile and flexible
- Malleable and suitable for forming to curved surfaces
- Reliable protection against structural damage caused by lightning strike
